HUNTINGTON, Ind. (FDN) Students at HU can now spend more time with the opposite sex in their individual dorm rooms this school year.

Student life officials approved the new open-dorm policy at the end of the last spring semester to be implemented this school year. The new times are Wednesday 7-11 p.m., Friday and Saturday 7 p.m.- 12 a.m., and Sunday 1-9 p.m.

The old policy stated open-dorm times were Wednesday from 7-9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 7 p.m. – 12 a.m., Sunday 1-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Last year, students requested more hours to Student Government Association (SGA). They argued extra time in the dorms would grant students more time to work on homework or projects and also participate in extra-curricular activities together.

Groups of students on campus have different thoughts on the revised policy. The extended times impact RA’s and their residents in different ways. When asked about how the new policy has changed dorm life for residents and residential-life staff members, RA of Livingston 3rd Elijah Hills saw the new policy as beneficial for both groups.

“Students don’t have to worry about cutting off movies or game nights short, so it’s been a cool experience to have that extra time,” says Hills. “Even for the RA’s, it’s been nice because we are also students, and we get to use the open dorm time as well.”
